Terry Masters’ New Gallery, Mark Kerckhoff Classes, Desert Art Center Lectures

Terry Masters, Moonlit Path to Tahquitz

UPDATE: This just in from Terry: “I’m now open Thur-Sun noon to 8pm at least and the doors are usually open when I’m working in the space. Please come by soon. The new studio # is 778-8855.”

I’ve been lurking around the original Las Casuelas restaurant on South Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs. Peeking in windows and pacing the sidewalk, I may look suspicious–but really it’s for a good reason. The desert’s elusive master painter, aptly named Terry Masters, is opening a new desert art gallery at 370 N. Palm Canyon, next door to the popular Mexican café. In his typically understated way, Masters has not announced an opening date. The only advance publicity is an excited buzz amongst Terry’s students and friends, who hang around the scene waiting for opening day.

The desert is sorely in need of a new desert landscape gallery, given the demise of Edenhurst in Palm Desert and with dealer and appraiser Kevin Stewart moving part-time to Santa Barbara. The last time I stalked Terry’s new place, it was spiffed up inside and rumors are it is even open on occasion. The elegant lettering on the exterior–“dp”–stands for Desert Painter Gallery. Inside I could see a large Laguna painting by Mark Kerckhoff; along with Terry’s typically loose and moody landscapes.

Not to put too much pressure on Masters, but everyone who loves desert painting is rooting for the success of this new gallery.

As well as appearing in Terry Masters’ new gallery, the Laguna-based painter Mark Kerckhoff has two desert workshops scheduled: November 13-14, an Anza- Borrego desert workshop, and a November 27-28 workshop in the Coachella Valley. Learn from this influential abstract realist who was inspired by the best: Thomas Moran and William Keith.
