Desert Paintings Appraisal Day in Palm Desert

Readers of this site send me questions—Who is Ollie McDonald? Know anything about Larry Sitter? I usually refer them to a local dealer or the website AskArt. Next Saturday those of you in the Coachella Valley have a chance to bring your questions—and your paintings—to the real experts.

On Art Appraisal Day at the Historical Society of Palm Desert–held in conjunction with the Valleywide celebration called Desertscapes–appraisers Kevin Stewart and Alissa Anderson will give informal, verbal valuations of desert and California paintings, prints and photos. If they don’t know your artist, they’ll steer you to someone who might.

For every desert painter we know of there are a thousand unknowns, and some of those nameless artists are as good as the famous guys. Bring your paintings to Palm Desert and help discover a forgotten master.

Fred Chisnall sold paintings by the roadside in Palm Desert.

Kevin Stewart has 30 years of experience appraising art and antiques, and is considered by some to be the foremost Coachella Valley authority on California art. He owned the Stewart Galleries in San Diego and Palm Springs from 1986 to 2001, and has worked with the collections of the Palm Springs Historical Society, the San Diego Museum of Art and San Diego Historical Society, among others.

Alissa Anderson is an art appraiser and owner of Anderson Shea Art Appraisals in Santa Barbara. Specializing in American paintings, drawings, and sculpture, she is a member of the Appraisers Association of America and assembles appraisals for insurance purposes, fair market value, estate, and charitable donation. Anderson recently served as guest curator of “Milford Zornes: An American Artist” at the Wildling Art Museum. With expertise in California modernism, she authored the book Nell Brooker Mayhew: Paintings on Paper.

I have two small 4-1/2×4-1/2 oils signed by “MAC” and “McD” of Old trees in foreground – look like coastlines to me. On back it says: Oil Paintings
    O.McDonald
    Yucaipa Calif

I believe they are the work of Olline McDonald (1920-2005). Can you confirm that for me and tell me if I should have them appraised?
