North Shore Salton Sea Artists Get Exhibit

LA Times reporter Ed Ainsworth was the ringleader of a small arts colony on the North Shore of the Salton Sea. Over the years, artists such as Maynard Dixon, Jimmy Swinnerton, Bill Bender and John Hilton all gravitated to this remote spot. Now the North Shore artists will be getting their due in an exhibit at the new Salton Sea Museum www.SaltonSeaMuseum.org.

The Museum is part of an ambitious plan by Riverside County to renovate the circa 1958 North Shore Yacht Club, designed by Albert Frey. Community activist and preservationist Jennie Kelly will direct the museum, and is collecting information on the early Salton Sea artists. Among her acquisitions so far are paintings by Barry Atwater who lived at nearby Dos Palmas oasis. Watch for more on happenings at North Shore, and please help Jennie’s grassroots effort in any way you can.
